Sands End Heritage Project

The project focuses on the Sands End area in South Fulham. Sands End was originally a sparsely populated marshy area where manorial tenants could pasture their animals. The building of Fulham gasworks in 1824, and further industrial development along the river Thames later in the 19th century transformed Sands End into a working-class suburb. The area has seen a great deal of change in recent years. The gasworks and the factories have closed, the area has to a considerable extent been gentrified, and Chelsea Harbour has been built nearby. The changes have not been particularly well documented and local people have not been asked for their opinions or experiences. The time scale covered will be 1939 to present day, but there will also be an opportunity to look at photographs and maps dating from around 1900.
